This standard was prepared by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA), with support from ISO/TC 176, Quality management and quality assurance.

The current standard is based upon the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems – Requirements with many added automotive industry requirements known as “sector-specific supplemental requirements”.
